What is the course content?

The course begins with the basics of Mandarin Chinese, giving children the foundations of Chinese phonics (called pinyin) and an understanding of Chinese characters. The course then builds upon this and teaches children basic words such as numbers, ages and family members. As students learn increasingly advanced vocab and sentence structures they will combine what they have learned and use it to make more complicated sentences, such as expression preferences for colours or foods. We intend to keep creating classes to take children all the way up to GCSE level or beyond!

How long are the classes?

Our classes contain a fun and interactive video of roughly 10 minutes. Each video is packed with different activities designed to encourage student’s excitement. The videos are accompanied by a quiz which has been tailored to reinforce the children’s learning. Each lesson also contains a downloadable activity for parent and child or for classmates to use together to encourage usage of Mandarin outside of the video context.

Is a lack of Mandarin speakers ‘holding the UK economy back’?

British business leaders are calling for Chinese to be taught in schools and universities, as language and communication barriers make it increasingly difficult to do business in China, a report warns.

New research released from management consultancy the Hay Group reveals that British business leaders expect sales to China to be worth 10% of their global revenues, equivalent to £200bn a year in 2009, making China the UK’s most important export market.

However, they believe lack of language skills and understanding of the Chinese market is holding UK PLC back. The research found that the UK currently produces fewer than 500 graduates a year from programmes in which Mandarin is a substantial part of the degree.

Why Mandarin? Why Now?

China will overtake the US as the world’s largest economy in the next few years and Mandarin is the official language of China.  The UK government has said that a lack of Mandarin speakers is holding the UK economy back.  Learning Mandarin will give children a head start when applying for university or for jobs in a highly competitive climate.  In addition, both sides of the brain are used when students are learning Mandarin, creating neurological benefits that are only created by studying tonal languages like Mandarin.

Learning foreign languages at a young age has many clear and well-researched benefits.  The first and foremost benefit is that learning a language before the age of about 10 makes it much easier to learn other languages in the future. Studies have also shown that learning a foreign language leads to improved GCSE grades and literacy in your own language, as well as increased self-confidence.
